  • Actor Cesar Di Bello Talks about his Career in Hollywood

By Robert White,  Editor-In-Chief Cesar Di Bello was born in Argentina but lived most of his life in Spain until he decided to take a step forward in his career and move to Los Angeles to pursue his real dream job of acting. From an early age, he discovered his love for stories whether they were in books or films. After getting a double degree in Law and Business Management he worked in the legal field as an expert on Anti Money Laundering. His curiosity about acting ended up taking over and after four years of working as a legal consultant, he quit everything and flew to Los Angeles to study at Stella Adler. As an actor, he was in competition into the Cannes Film Festival with the film “Manifesto” where he played the lead role of Simon. Cesar also recently won the Best Actor Award at the Stella Adler Short and Sweet Festival for the lead role of Enrique at the film “Paloma” directed by the awarded filmmaker Jean Lee. His comedy “Original Sin”- where he plays the lead role of the distant husband, Adrian- has won the Best Foreign Film award at the Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival and the Best Comedy award at Milan International Filmmaker Festival. It also has been in competition at the Austin Film Festival, Cinequest, Chicago Latino Film Festival, Cardiff Film Festival and the Ashland Independent Film Festival, among others. The drama “Pasarea” - where he plays the pimp Nikolai- has also been in competition in several festivals, like Festival de Cine de Malaga . What kind of roles do you prefer? My favorites are those with a bigger arc and where I can use some of my comedy chops. Have you ever had a really bad day but had to perform anyway? How did you get through it? Well, I remember two moments. Once, I had a bike accident as I was going to a scene study presentation, I hurt my left arm and leg, the clothes on that side were shattered and you could see some blood coming out but I went straight up to perform. After rehearsing that scene for a few weeks not performing that night wasn´t in my head at all so I explained the situation to my teacher, he gave me his permission to perform and I had a blast on stage that night. On another occasion, I went through a break up right before opening my first play at my hometown, Madrid. I´m grateful because both times everything worked out great. I just tried to stay focused on the stage and trust the rest of it. How do you prepare for a role? Preparing for a role is one of my favorite parts of the process. I break down the script to really understand what´s happening and who is my character. I also do a lot of research about the period and place where the story takes place, his profession and other characteristics, etc. César, you´ve played from heartbroken addicts to persons with severe physical limitations or people from other period of time, what character was the toughest for you to change into? Every character is different and brings new challenges but the toughest one so far has been Adrián from “Original Sin”, because playing a man who just can´t become the man he´s been taught to be was very interesting and challenging for me. I ended up having a lot of empathy for people like him. There are a lot of Adriáns out there. What was your first role? When was it? I believe my first performance as an actor was on the stage around March 2014, I played two small roles, a cop and a Puerto Rican concierge in the play “Six Degrees of Separation” with the Stella Adler Lab Theater Company. It was very special for me since I was performing with some of my teachers. Also, Mark Ruffalo came to see us! How was filming “Original Sin”? It was intense but I loved the whole experience. We were really lucky to have such a great team of talented people on set. And observing Jean Lee (the director) doing her thing was incredible. Also, seeing the behind the scenes of a feature film really confirmed me my wish of directing. Congratulations for your award as best actor at the Stella Adler Festival for your role of Enrique at the movie “Paloma”. How did you get that role? I was called in to audition and had a blast in the room. I guess I created a good impression in the director and the producer because after a few days they offered me the lead role of Enrique. • Dark at Sea An Interview with Director Carlos Asse

By Robert White ,  Editor-In-Chief Shot on 35mm motion picture film, LA-based Director Carlos Asse’s short film Dark at Sea portrays a man’s struggle with himself to find true meaning in his journey as a dancer. The film offers an unsettling exploration of frustration and defeat; and the externalization of one self’s addiction to success. Carlos is a well-known director who has been awarded in a number of venues and festivals around the world and has been involved in non-profit organizations. We caught up with director Carlos Asse to hear about the challenges and rewards of shooting Dark at Sea . Carlos, can you tell us how Dark at Sea came to life? The initial concept came to life after Paul Theodoroff, the cinematographer, and I were catching up and found out that we were both trying to explore a side of filmmaking that we had never approached or experimented with in the past. I wanted to create something different. A small idea sparked our interest and I developed it until we felt we had something worth creating. What were the main themes and messages you, as a director, wanted to infuse in this film? Dark at Sea started as a love letter to the ambitions and the payoffs that come with being a creative, and the sacrifices that it entails. I wanted to create something personal and abstract but that the general audience, and especially our creative community, could relate to and enjoy. I was hungry and passionate to create something from a vulnerable standpoint. Making this film reminded me that the persistence and self-afflicting nature of the human being is, however, what keeps us hungry for what’s left out there to conquer. How did you approach your concept and ideas to actually shoot the short film? Once this idea manifested and I shared my thoughts with Paul, we both knew we wanted to shoot it on 35mm motion picture film. This was crucial for the project since the theme and essence of the concept deals with self-exploration and how us, humans, tend to reject uncertainty, rather than embrace it. I was sure I wanted to make this one count, and shooting on celluloid was, in a way, making me experience the theme of my own film: detaching from a tangible and materialistic goal and forcing myself to appreciate what I was doing for what it meant to me, not what I could directly obtain from it in the end. How did you go about directing Matthew, your main talent, to get the results you wanted? The experience on set was really refreshing. I knew I wanted to approach this in a more conceptual way rather than straight-forward/tangible directions. Matthew was really open to it, too. He is very talented and smart, and he knew how to approach this project from the start and showed up on set with a clear idea of what he wanted to do. Matthew and I started brainstorming ideas for his choreography and together we shaped it until we had something that worked well for the concept. What were some of the obstacles or difficulties you encountered while shooting this film, if any? We knew from the start that shooting Dark at Sea on motion picture film was going to be a challenge. We really didn’t have many resources to get this done but everything happened organically. Paul and I met almost daily for a little over a week and produced it ourselves. We were able to borrow most of the gear from friends and our small crew came on board with the best attitude. However, my initial concept was far more complex than what we actually were able to shoot. We ran through three different 35mm cameras until the last one finally worked. We were about to hit the 6th hour on set without a single shot done. It was nerve wracking: failing over and over. What’s important is that we took a risk and we were able to make Dark at Sea exist, and it was so rewarding in the end. www.carlosasse.com Photographer: Yarden Lior

The single got great reviews from various tastemakers, with words like: " Strandels  provide an authentic take on one of the most calculated genres in the game, and they’re successful.” ( IndieHappyHour ) Now the pair are releasing their second single ‘Not My Party’ . Written by Tova and Sixten along with Johan Lindbrandt (Alex and Sierra, BoTalks) and Scott Effman (Kelly Clarkson, Justin Bieber) the song tells a story of unrequited love. With a melancholy, ethereal feel, driven by Tova and Sixtens harmonizing vocals, ‘Not My Party’ showcases their next step towards their debut album. ”In short ’Not My Party’ is about a love affair. That you’re falling for someone but you’re trying to get rid of those emotions since that person wants to be with someone else. It’s like a forbidden area to even think about. So the story in the song is about crossing that line because both people are drawn to each other, even though you shouldn’t do anything about it. ” 'Strandels - Not My Party' - Spotify:  http://po.st/notmyparty - Music Video:  https://youtu.be/EHzM8tehz7M - All Platforms: https://fanlink.to/notmyparty

  • Big Mountain is back with a new song!

By Robert White,  Editor-In-Chief Big Mountain, is a reggae band known for its remake of Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way", which became a top 10 hit single in the US in early 1994, reaching No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and No. 2 in the UK., and won the MTV Europe Music Awards as Best Cover. The song was also featured in the soundtrack of the film, Reality Bites (Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke) (1994). Its follow-up, "Sweet Sensual Love" reached No. 51 in the UK, whilst the album Unity went on to sell over a million copies worldwide. The band first reached the charts with the song "Touch My Light" in 1993, a song is taken from their debut album Wake Up. In 2004, after 15 years and 9 albums on major labels, which included Warner Records, Big Mountain decided to take some time off to focus on family and side projects. In 2015 Quino McWhinney, the band’s lead singer, put together a successful Kickstarter campaign to test the waters and finance a recording project. The strong show of support convinced the band that it was time for a comeback. The album “Perfect Summer” was released in 2016 and that same year the band was back on the world stage headlining Rototom Reggae Festival in Valencia, Spain. They have since headlined the One Love Festival in New Zealand, Pol’and’Rock Festival and Colombo Music Festival in Sri Lanka. In 2017 the band received a big boost from Hollywood by being included in the soundtrack for the successful remake of Jumanji. Ooh, Baby, I Love Your Way is proving to be one of the most successful songs in the history of music as Big Mountain continues to hold onto a strong listening audience worldwide without the help of a major label. The band is currently exceeding 3 million streams per month on Spotify. Big Mountain also holds claim to being pioneers of reggae in Spanish. Touch My Light recorded in 1992 was the band’s first radio hit and was recorded in Spanish and English. A disc jockey in El Centro California took it upon himself to splice a Spanglish version. That version quickly became a favorite around the southwest US. On Big Mountain’s next album Unity the song “Un Sensual Amor” became a top 10 hit in Spain in 1994. Quino and his brother James, percussionist and singer of Big Mountain, are Americans of Mexican heritage. Their maternal grandparents migrated to the United States as farmers from Chihuahua, Mexico, in the early 1900’s. Growing up in San Diego exposed the McWhinney brothers to the terrible pain and suffering families endure when they get torn apart by deportation. They believe that all people have a right to travel far and wide to fulfill their dreams, especially when it comes to bettering their lives and the lives of their children and families. Big Mountain just released their new single ‘Deportation Nation’ and a video filmed by the Mexico-US border wall to demonstrate to their undocumented immigrant sisters and brothers that the band stands in solidarity with their plight. A documentary of the single will also be released in mid-November. But it’s not the first time they sing about this important issue. In 1994, as part of their album Unity, they released a song called Border Town to express their views on this issue. Music producer, composer, singer, and entrepreneur Marcus Bell has created the “100 Dayz Challenge” in his ‘Wealth and Impact’ boot camp to guide people to the way to success. People will be able to join any time through the year. This Challenge helps people achieve their goals in life, not matter what they are, by creating a sense of community. People joining this challenge will have to do something every day that will help them get where they want to be. And every day they’ll have to share with the rest of the community what they did. This way they feel they really have to stick to it and they belong to a community. They’ll also have to create a consequence for themselves, something they’d hate doing. If they miss one day of the challenge, they’ll have to apply that consequence. Each individual has a different goal, it could be getting a better relationship with your family or partner, growing your company, selling more records, or anything anyone wants. Years ago, Marcus was $75K in debt and life wasn’t as easy as it is now… But he managed to go from being in debt to becoming a millionaire and the go-to music producer/songwriter for celebrity artists because he learnt how to commit to his goals. • Six Steps To Change Your Life

The last 12 months has given us so much time for reflection that many people are asking themselves, “is there another way?” Many of us have been forced to stop on our little hamster wheels (even if it was just for a minute) and wondered if the pace we were going at, (or what we’re actually doing) mattered anymore. Maybe the dream you started chasing when you were twenty-one is not the one you actually want today. You’re looking in the mirror and at 48 realizing that maybe it never was. Your means to an end is now just plain mean and has to end in itself. Perhaps you’re leading the life that someone else wants for you or maybe your part of someone else’s dream. Maybe your simply bored and requiring a new challenge. In those moments of introspection, you may consider the lifestyle you’re in isn’t the one for you anymore. You may question yourself and be contemplating, how happy are you and if you’re getting what you truly desire out of life? Sometimes we get so entrenched in our dogmatism that we’ve forgotten what we actually want out of life and as the years have rolled on, we simply got stuck on cruise control… Trying to figure out change can be difficult because for many it’s easy to know what we don’t want, rather than what we do. Ironically, whilst we’re focused on what we don’t want, we attract more of the same into our lives and therefore the life and happiness we desire gets further and further away, eluding us and making us sadder than a flipflop salesman in February. I think it’s handy to understand what we don’t want in order to eliminate it from our thinking. Curiously though, when we think about what we do want, we can unconsciously think about what we don’t want too…so you have to watch that. It’s ironic, you can’t think about what you want without thinking about what you don’t, so whatever is most dominant in your mind will be arriving on your doorstep. That's why it’s so important to have clarity around this. So, if you’re thinking about being healthy and focused on not wanting to eat that plate of biscuits that’s being passed around the office (i.e., the lounge), only to wonder why all of a sudden you have crumbs all over your jogging bottoms and chocolate round your mouth, you now know why!!! Removing what we don’t want from our consciousness and replacing it with what you really want, is the solution (a stick of celery in the above scenario, obviously) and easier said than done, but achievable through willpower or simply practicing mindfulness on a daily basis. Practiced first thing in the morning, before you start your day, mindfulness allows you to slow down your thinking, catches the old or negative thinking and keeps us on track as you create new thinking habits and compound those thoughts over time. They have the ability to help change your thinking and create new, positive behaviors and outcomes we truly desire in our lives. In a previous life, BC (Before Corona) I was on a road trip to from Florence to Siena, my friend Sandra and I were talking about this, here are some of the questions that were part of our conversation. I’d love to share them with you…they may help you remove some blocks and give you the focus to appreciate where you are right now and propel you towards what could make you happy – take some time to consider these questions and the commit to paper your thoughts… STEP 1 · What do you absolutely not want? · What do you absolutely not want to feel? I imagine that was simple. What we don’t want comes to us easy but what we want to do is ensure that we appreciate what we really desire… · What do you want? · What do you want to feel? These questions can be applied to relationships, career, money, health & spirituality. It starts with us. STEP 2 · How do you want others to feel? · What are you committed to no longer doing that is not serving you? If you’re being committed to change then honesty goes a long, long way…our ego’s the enemy and it often pulls the wool over our eyes, it drives us with fear and clouds our judgment… If you’re completely open to change, you take full responsibility for your own feelings and actions, then you can change how you think and feel. We can choose how we react with others and thereby notice how people start to respond and feel different with us. STEP 3 Once you know what you want and how you want to feel the hard work begins, you have to be true to yourself and unshakeable with your desire and how you want to feel different… · 7. How much do you really want this? · 8. Why do you really want this? · 9. What sort of level of discipline are you prepared to exercise to get what you want? · 10. What are you going to do on a daily basis to support this? · 11. How are you going to monitor this? STEP 4 Keeping yourself on track on a regular basis helps create the new thinking, habits and behaviors, you can do this with an app, or set yourself a reminder on your phone that pings up several times per day, saying, “How did I do?” · How will you know when you are successful? · How will that make you feel? · What do you want from your life? · When do you want this? Visualization combined with an emotion will help you keep what will make you happy out front and central in your mind, picking you up when your down and a constant reminder that the work will be worth it in the end. Vision boards are very motivational, and I use one on a daily basis to support this. Change them up regularly and move them around the house or they become part of the furniture. STEP 5 The final piece of the jigsaw and often a large part of why you’re not where you want to be is letting other people take control of your purpose…if you don’t have your own dream, you’ll simply become a component in someone else’s. Be strong, get support if you need it, enroll a mentor, friend or join a network of like-minded people to help you stay on track and choose to see clearly what this is going to take… · Do you have the correct tools for the job? · Do you understand what you’re going to do entails? · Are you REALLY doing this? · What’s stopping you? Once you realize and remove the blocks and address what’s stopping you. You can being to affirm that whatever you think will happen, WILL happen and lead you to your last question: STEP 6 · When are you going to start? Energy of action follows thought, and you’ll find you’ve got the ability to change your life RIGHT NOW when you act on your new resolution. I believe firmly in possibilities and I believe that you have what it takes to live a full and bounteous life by taking it one step at a time. Set your new goals for your future happiness and act on your new resolution today. Don’t wait for the right time. There’s no such thing! Achieve your goals and as get the job done your self-esteem will grow and you’ll start to feel so much better about your life. Choose to fast track it, the more you procrastinate and the longer your take it and the harder you make it for yourself – it’s like going to the bikini waxers on trainee day…five minutes or five hours…It’s your choice…just rip the flipping strips off and get on with it…it might be painful…but doing something painful for a short time in order to get what you want forever is worth the OUCH-Factor! When it all boils down to it, the only person who’s going to make the change and achieve the success and happiness that you deserve is you…so put the wax in the microwave, get out those waxing strips and get ready and get to work– I believe in you and I know you can do it…
