If you’ve ever wondered what ska punk sounds like without the horns but with all the grit, groove, and urgency—you’ll find it in Joker’s Republic. The Essex County, New Jersey trio has been carving their own lane in the ska-punk world with raw energy, sharp songwriting, and an unshakable camaraderie that shines both on stage and off. With their latest single Break The Cycle now out and their upcoming album The Hand You’ve Been Dealt set to release October 10 via Punkerton Records, the band is pushing forward with their most dynamic and danceable work yet.

Produced by Roger Lima of Less Than Jake and mixed/mastered by Grammy-nominated Eric Taft, Break The Cycle is a rallying cry against burnout and monotony. Driven by a 2 Tone-inspired ska rhythm, the track carries both urgency and levity, reminding listeners that real change requires action. “We’re not really a ‘traditional ska’ kind of band, but we do like the music,” says vocalist and guitarist Austen Gray. “Break The Cycle tries to pay homage to the more 2 Tone sound while staying true to ourselves.”
Bassist Billy Smolen, drummer Pat Elwood, and Gray each bring distinct musical backgrounds, but together they’ve found a creative chemistry that fans immediately recognize. What started in basements and high school projects has now grown into a seasoned trio with national tours and festival slots under their belt. “People kept telling us—whatever the three of you are doing together, protect that lineup,” Billy recalls. “The energy just clicks.”

That energy is captured on The Hand You’ve Been Dealt, a 12-track record balancing humor and heaviness while exploring themes of identity, politics, mental health, and resilience. The band describes the process as their most collaborative yet, with each member contributing to the writing and arrangements. “It’s always been about figuring out what makes a Joker’s Republic song unique,” says Billy. “This time, we really leaned into building it together.”
Their momentum hasn’t gone unnoticed. Following the success of their 2023 release Necessary Evil on Ska Punk International and appearances at Punk Rock Saves Lives Fest and SPI Fest, Joker’s Republic is now touring with heavyweights like Save Ferris and Space Monkey Mafia. With East Coast dates lined up alongside PWRUP and Mega Infinity, plus a slot at the Supernova International Ska Festival, the band is proving that ska punk without horns still packs a punch.
For fans, the message is clear: Joker’s Republic is only getting started. Their mission is simple—loud, fast, fun, and unapologetic. As Austen puts it, “This is the most road-tested, refined version of us yet. And we can’t wait to share it.”
