Slow-Crafted, Plant-Based Excellence, Introducing The Blackbird Foods Journey

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

In the bustling world of frozen foods, where convenience often trumps quality, one brand is rewriting the script. Meet Emanuel Storch, the visionary behind Blackbird Foods, a company that's redefining frozen eats with a commitment to slow-crafted, plant-based excellence.

Blackbird Foods' story is one of adaptation and resilience, born out of the challenges of the pandemic. Emanuel, hailing from a background in package goods and with a passion for plant-based cuisine, found himself facing an abrupt shift when the pandemic shuttered restaurants overnight. With their mainstay restaurant, Blackbird, in Philly, and recognizing the need to evolve, Emanuel and his collaborators pivoted swiftly.

"We started off with a plant-based protein for restaurants," Emanuel explains. "But when COVID happened, our customer base disappeared overnight." Undeterred, they launched frozen pizzas on their website, offering customers across the nation a taste of their slow-crafted creations.

What sets Blackbird Foods apart is their unwavering dedication to quality. While mass-produced frozen pizzas dominate the market, Emanuel and his team take a different approach. "No one was making real pizza and selling it in the frozen food section," he notes. Each step of the process is meticulously executed, from hand-tossing the dough made the night before to cooking and packaging with precision. The result? Frozen pizzas and wings that rival their restaurant counterparts in taste and texture.

With the success of their current offerings, like Birdie's pizzas and wings, Blackbird Foods is poised for expansion. "We found our consumers in the wings and pizza aisle," Emanuel shares. "But we're growing these new products." Exciting additions, including Texas BBQ and Thai Chili Wings, are on the horizon, alongside a cheese-less tomato veggie pizza. Looking ahead, Emanuel envisions breakfast items and potential partnerships with bagel companies, all staying true to their ethos of slow-crafted, plant-based foods.

From its humble beginnings in 2020, with Emanuel wearing multiple hats and pounding the pavement to secure local stores and distributors, Blackbird Foods has soared to new heights. "Year one was over $1 million in sales," Emanuel recalls, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. Today, with their own factory in Queens, NY, and a team of 40 passionate individuals, Blackbird Foods is a testament to perseverance and innovation.

As Blackbird Foods continues to captivate taste buds and challenge industry norms, one thing remains certain: their dedication to slow-crafted, plant-based excellence is unwavering. Whether you're indulging in a slice of their artisanal pizza or savoring their delectable wings, you're experiencing the culmination of passion, innovation, and a commitment to redefining the frozen food landscape, one bite at a time.

So, next time you find yourself perusing the freezer aisle, consider elevating your culinary experience with Blackbird Foods. After all, why settle for ordinary when you can savor the extraordinary?
