At just 22 years old, Pip Lewis is carving out a space in the music world with her introspective storytelling and ethereal soundscapes. The British singer-songwriter, now based in San Diego, has been honing her craft for over a decade, blending indie pop with lush, emotionally resonant melodies. With the release of her latest single, Safe & Sound, off her forthcoming album Growing Pains, Pip offers a hauntingly beautiful reflection on solitude, connection, and self-discovery.

Originally from Hampshire, England, Pip’s love for music was cultivated early. “I grew up with incredible music playing in my house—everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Joy Division and Peter Gabriel,” she recalls. “My parents have great taste, and I’d stay up way past my bedtime watching music videos with my dad.” That early exposure sparked a deep passion, leading her to pick up the guitar at just seven years old and eventually teach herself multiple instruments and music production. By 2016, she was releasing her own music, drawing inspiration from artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers.

Her new album Growing Pains is an intimate, autobiographical journey through young adulthood, exploring themes of love, loss, self-acceptance, and transformation. “This album is about navigating the shift from young adult to adult,” Pip explains. “It’s about my first heartbreak, my first real sense of belonging, and coming into my own confidence.” The title itself hints at the emotional depth within—each track a chapter in her evolving story.
The first single, Safe & Sound, sets the tone for what’s to come. “This song is inspired by the idea that one can feel alone in a room full of people,” Pip shares. “It’s a cry for help into the crowd and a love letter to those who answer it.” The accompanying music video captures this feeling visually, featuring Pip wading through a sea of people—who, in reality, are her closest friends. “It was important to have them in the video because they represent the ones who see me when I feel most invisible.”
Shot in both isolated desert landscapes and bustling crowds, the video enhances the song’s message. One standout moment features Pip dramatically drinking what appears to be sand—a scene that had many viewers asking if she truly committed to such an extreme artistic choice. “No, it wasn’t sand,” she laughs. “It was brown sugar. Still not pleasant, but better than actual sand.”
While Safe & Sound carries an undercurrent of anxiety, Pip sees a deeper meaning within it. “Some people hear the panic, but there’s also strength in it,” she says. “It’s about realizing that even in chaos, you can find a sense of self and security.” That theme of self-assurance is woven throughout Growing Pains. “This album is me coming to terms with my individuality—learning that I can survive on my own, but I can also thrive with others.”
The album, set for release this summer, will continue to roll out single by single, with Dead Ringer, a drum-driven, ‘80s-inspired track, dropping next month. “I used samples from the iconic Linn drum machine—it has that classic Blue Monday beat by New Order. It’s a bit more upbeat than what people might expect from me.” Pip also teases a deluxe version of Growing Pains coming later in the year, featuring unreleased demos and deeper cuts from the creative process.

With her unmistakable voice, poignant lyricism, and ability to capture the nuances of human emotion, Pip Lewis is poised to make a lasting mark on the indie pop scene. As she continues to release new music and build momentum, one thing is clear—her storytelling is just getting started.
