Harry Styles Sparked Backlash Over His Grammys Speech

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

Harry Styles, the talented British singer-songwriter and actor, has received backlash following his acceptance speech at the 2023 Grammy Awards. The backlash came after Styles won the Album of the Year award, which was highly anticipated and hotly contested.

Styles took to the stage to accept his award and used his moment in the spotlight to deliver a direct message to his humbled fans and those of the other artists in the category...

“I think on nights like tonight it’s important for us to remember there is no such thing as ‘best’ in music. I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions on what is going to get us one of these,” Styles said, referring to the award in his hands, which he won for the album “Harry’s House.”

But it was the last sentence of his speech that riled up social media users, who took different interpretations of what he meant: “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice. Thank you very much,” Styles said, before handing the microphone off to his co-writers Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson.

Twitter, Tiktok, Facebook, and Instagram users instantly asked what did Harry mean by saying "People like me"? The multiple posts on the topic got twisted into it being a "White Privilege thing to say" but the race card is not something that can be used here.

We simply think Harry was shocked that a young man from Homles Chapel in Chesire, England had come all this way through his career to win this covenant reward. Harry grew up in a working-class family. His parents divorced when he was seven years old, and he was raised primarily by his mother and stepfather. Leaving England for America, for music, not being a Hollywood elitist, and staying humble through all his milestones, just goes to show his good character.

Winning a grammy for Album of the year, he has cemented his mark in the music industry and his icon status has been created.

Lizzo, Beyonce, and the others nominated were humbled by the speech and you can see them applauding him as he walked on stage. The music industry is a family and artists support one another, it's not about winners or losers with these award shows because win or lose we will still support our favorite artists.

As Harry said, "It’s important for us to remember there is no such thing as ‘best’ in music."

They all are the best, Period!
